With the topic of mental health coming up a lot recently we are starting to see changes in the way peoples mental health is seen across many countries.
But how can sport help with mental health?
Mood
Sports has been proven to improve your mood. Whether its playing for a local team, going to the gym or a brisk walk, it all helps. As the body does physical activity the brain triggers chemicals that make you feel happier and more relaxed.
Team sports in particular help with your mood as the social part of the game and the challenge is a great way to engage and unwind.
Concentration
Keeping your body physically fit does keep your brain fit as well. Improving your critical thinking, learning, and using good judgement.
Reduce stress and depression
Exercise reduces the levels of stress hormones in the body. At the same time it stimulates endorphins which are the bodies natural mood lifters that help majorly to keep stress and depression at bay. These endorphins can also keep you motivated and optimistic after a workout.
Sleep
Physical activity improves your quality of sleep, doing this by giving you a deeper sleep and making you fall asleep faster. Sleeping better can improve your mental outlook and mood for the next day.
Weight
Sports like running, cycling, and weightlifting are all great ways to burning calories and/or losing weight. Staying within a recommended weight range reduces the risk of diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension.
Self-confidence
As your strength, skills, and stamina improves from sports your own self-image and confidence will greatly improve. With a new sense of confidence you may be more successful away from sport.
Very true, stacks up with what I see at work dealing with a variety of mental health issues.
